The Oil Baseline
An oil-heated house of ordinary size in this climate burns 600 to 900 gallons a winter. At recent prices in the high $3 range per gallon, fuel alone runs $2,100 to $3,400. Add the annual service contract oil burners require, $200 to $400 for the cleaning, nozzle, and filter work that keeps efficiency from sliding, and the true yearly cost sits near $2,400 to $3,800.

Electric Baseboard: The Cleanest Math in the Valley
The stock that heats with resistance baseboard, older flats, conversions in Allison Hill, some postwar infill, gets the shortest analysis of all. Baseboard delivers one unit of heat per unit of electricity; a heat pump delivers two and a half to three. The heating portion of the electric bill drops by more than half, with no fuel switch, no tank, no deliveries, and no combustion anywhere in the story. For these households the only real questions are sizing and head placement, and the payback is the fastest of any fuel case on this page.
Volatility, the Cost Nobody Budgets

The First Winter, Run Cautiously
Plenty of oil homes here distribute through radiators or old ducts, and neither has to go.
